Update
Today we celebrate Lesbian Visibility Day, a day dedicated to the visibility and recognition of lesbian women. We are taking this opportunity not only to highlight the current challenges faced by lesbian women, but also to take a look back at their history.
Lesbian women have historically suffered from double marginalisation both in society and within the LGBTQIA* community. Pioneers such as Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon were early advocates for gay rights, but often had to emphasise specific concerns of lesbian women.
In the 1970s, the founding of organisations such as the “Lesbian Herstory Archives” led to increased self-organisation of lesbian women in order to preserve their history and culture and to include their voices in political demands.
Leipzig Pride is strongly committed to making these stories visible and actively promoting the rights and recognition of lesbian women.
